LIFTOFF! ANSWERS

Sarah asks: “Who are some famous composers for classical guitar?”

Answer:

Hector Villa-Lobos is one of the most well-known composers for classical guitar, living in Brazil when he lived from 1887-1959.  He was self-taught yet became one of Brazil's and the world's most famous composers, writing over 2000 works.  Some pieces included the Bachianas Brasileiras, written to combine his interest in both Bach and traditional Brazilian folk music.  He also wrote concertos for Guitar, Piano, and Cello, and a variety of orchestral and chamber music.

Astor Piazzolla is another very famous composer who wrote works for the guitar, well-known for his hard-edged, contemporary tangos.  Some pieces included the Tango Suite for Guitar and Five Pieces for Guitar.  Piazzolla's works often incorporated somewhat rebellious elements, such as jazz stylings, dissonances, and complicated structures.  His pieces also reflected the tensions and realities of life in his home country Argentina.
